Braided Tree

Multi-Media Installation made of repurposed braided synthetic hair, metal mesh & a tree stump. 2025.

Braiding Tree (2025) merges plant life and human life to create a new species; a hybrid and mutated being in the form of a tree made from braided hair (repurposed and synthetic). This installation explores inter-racial and inter-species relationships and focuses on the different cycles involved in intimate relationships such as belonging, communication, reciprocity, growth, grieving and mourning. This work addresses biological and psychological aspects through the use of our senses in order to create bridges between people, communities and species. I explore the symbolism of the tree, of hair, and of braids through a personal lens and as universal concepts. This piece therefore draws inspiration from the relationships I have formed with elements of nature while living in the forest in my early childhood, from my experience growing up mainly surrounded by people of colour, and the intimate relationship I have with my own hair and the hair of my loved ones. On the other hand, this piece is also informed by research on the topic of animism, botany, hair and braids in a global context. *Special thank you to all (Pryscilla Polynice, Marie-Pierre Estel, Lisa Estel, Yvenie Junia Estel, Nicole Charles, Maurane Monpoint, Claire Corbeil, Gladeson Jasmin, Elijah Corbeil) who have donated their used hair extensions and/or for braiding assistance. Your donations and support are cherished and appreciated.
